Microgynon 30 ED is a combined oral contraceptive pill. It is the most prescribed pill in the UK. Microgynon 30 ED contains two active ingredients: ethinylestradiol 30 mcg and levonorgestrel 150 mcg. These are synthetic versions of the female reproductive hormones oestrogen and progesterone, which women naturally produce in their ovaries.

How it works

Microgynon 30 ED works by overriding the natural female cycle.

The combination of oestrogen and progesterone in Microgynon 30 ED inhibits ovulation, thickens cervical mucus to impede sperm motility and thins the womb lining to make it less able to nurture a fertilised egg.

Taking Microgynon 30 ED

Microgynon 30 ED is taken every day, so there are no pill-free days. The pill packs consist of two types of pill: active and inactive tablets.

All of the beige coloured tablets contained in the blister pack are active and have the same dose of hormones. The white tablets are inactive.

Start by taking the beige coloured tablets every day at about the same time every day, and then follow with 7 white Pill days. You should begin a new blister pack after you have taken all pills.

Microgynon 30 ED is normally prescribed to women who forget to start their new pill pack on the right day. The easy to follow every day formula gives women the same level of protection against unwanted pregnancy as Microgynon 30.

Microgynon 30 ED does not protect against sexually transmitted infection. Even if you are taking the pill to protect against unwanted pregnancy, you should always use a barrier method with a new partner until you have both been tested and cleared for STIs.

Other medications - such as antibiotics, the weight loss pill Xenical, and the emergency oral contraceptive pill – can decrease the effectiveness of Microgynon 30 ED. It is important you speak to your doctor about how any medicines you are prescribed may affect your contraceptive pill.
