How it works

Cilest works by overriding the natural female cycle.

The combination of oestrogen and progesterone in Cilest inhibits ovulation, thickens cervical mucus to impede sperm motility and thins the womb lining to make it less able to nurture a fertilised egg.

Taking Cilest

Cilest is a monophasic pill, which means all of the tablets contained in the blister pack have the same dose of hormones.

It is usually taken every day for 21 days at about the same time every day, and then followed by 7 Pill free days. You should begin a new blister pack after your Pill-free week.

Further information

Cilest does not protect against sexually transmitted infection. Even if you are taking the pill to protect against unwanted pregnancy, you should always use a barrier method with a new partner until you have both been tested and cleared for STIs.

Other medications - such as antibiotics, the weight loss pill Xenical, and the emergency oral contraceptive pill – can decrease the effectiveness of Cilest. It is important you speak to your doctor about how any medicines you are prescribed may affect your contraceptive pill.
