Microgynon 30

Microgynon 30 is a combined oral contraceptive pill. It is the most prescribed pill in the UK and the often the first your NHS GP will recommend. Microgynon 30 is an NHS favourite as it is effective, generally well tollerated and relatively cheap to prescribe. Microgynon 30 contains two active ingredients: ethinylestradiol 30 mcg and levonorgestrel 150 mcg. These are synthetic versions of the female reproductive hormones oestrogen and progesterone, which women naturally produce in their ovaries.

How it works

Microgynon 30 works by overriding the natural female cycle.

The combination of oestrogen and progesterone in Microgynon 30 inhibits ovulation, thickens cervical mucus to impede sperm motility and thins the womb lining to make it less able to nurture a fertilised egg.

Taking Microgynon 30

Microgynon 30 is a monophasic pill, which means all of the tablets contained in the blister pack have the same dose of hormones.

It is usually taken every day for 21 days at about the same time every day, and then followed by 7 Pill free days. You should begin a new blister pack after your Pill-free week.

Further information

Microgynon 30 does not protect against sexually transmitted infection. Even if you are taking the pill to protect against unwanted pregnancy, you should always use a barrier method with a new partner until you have both been tested and cleared for STIs.

Other medications - such as antibiotics, the weight loss pill Xenical, and the emergency oral contraceptive pill – can decrease the effectiveness of Microgynon 30. It is important you speak to your doctor about how any medicines you are prescribed may affect your contraceptive pill.

Microgynon versus Cilest

Reviewed by Emma on .

I started taking Microgynon 30 three years ago. It was the first pill I had ever taken. I noticed that I started to gain weight within a few weeks of taking it. I didnt notice much of a difference to my skin, which was spot prone at the time, however it has cleared up now, although this is more likely to be due to me changing my skin care products. My periods became lighter while on this pill, which was ideal, but I did experience some bowel cramps. My doctor told me that this is quite a common side effect of the pill. After three years I had noticed definite weight gain and I also felt as though my emotions were up and down, which I attributed to the pill. I became emotional over the slightest thing and felt quite low for no reason. I asked my doctor for Yasmin as I had heard it was one of the better pills, and she is currently applying for me to get it. In the mean time I have been prescribed Cilest. My doctor said that because Microgynon comes from an older group of hormones, it can cause more side effects, however newer pills such as Yasmin and Cilest tend to come with less side effects, although this will vary from woman to woman.
