Cutting through the 'Myths and Facts' about Viagra

Since its launch in 1998, Viagra is one of the most recognisable medications in the world. Due to the nature of its function and the fact that it was the first treatment of its kind, there has been a lot of hype and myths created about the ED drug. It can be very hard for a first time customer to know what to expect if they are considering buying Viagra. This page is designed to provide a guide to Pfizer’s famous creation.

Viagra

Here are some common myths about Viagra that we will be addressing

Myth

It is an aphrodisiac

Fact

Viagra is NOT an aphrodisiac. It is one of three oral treatments for erectile dysfunction (or impotence as it's sometimes called). It is not a magic wand that will give you an erection no matter what.

It is a diamond-shaped blue pill containing the active ingredient sildenafil . It works by blocking an enzyme called phosphodiesterase (PDE5) which is found primarily in the penis. By inhibiting PDE5, the blood vessels in the penis remain relaxed for a longer period allowing for increased blood flow. It also has the effect of “trapping” the blood in the penis helping to produce longer-lasting erections. The drug only allows an erection to result following sexual stimulation. No sexual stimulation; no erection.

Myth

It gives you a constant erection.

Fact

Viagra will not leave you with an erection that won't go away once ejaculation occurs. The impotence treatment remains effective for approximately four hours (this may vary from person to person). In RARE cases, a condition known as priapism (must be treated medically) can occur, so the label now contains a warning.

Viagra may not turn you into a 'sexual superman' but it is an extremely effective treatment. In all studies, Pfizer's treatment demonstrated significant improvement as compared to a placebo (dummy tablets). It has been shown to work in 78% of men regardless of the cause of their impotence. In the case of men suffering from hypertension, it works in 70% of patients and for those being treated for diabetes, the success rate is 57%.

Myth

It works from the first moment you take it.

Fact

You won't get an instant erection after taking viagra. Not only does the drug need sexual stimulation, it also needs time and the right conditions.

Viagra should be taken one hour prior to sexual activity. (remains effective for approximately four hours) and should not be taken more than once in any 24-hour period. Before taking it you should avoid eating fatty food and alcohol as both will affect the absorption of the drug into your system.

Don’t expect an instant erection. You also have a part to play. It may not work at all the first time you take it, it may take a few times. If you feel anxiety about it and don't want to let your partner or yourself down. The first time you try viagra, you may want to masturbate by yourself to see if it works.

Myth

It lasts longer with a higher dose.

Fact

Viagra comes in three doses 25mg, 50mg, 100mg. The different strenghts do not have a bearing on time frame (ie. A higher the dose doesn't mean a larger 'window' of opportunity)

You should try the standard dose of 50mg first. Only if this proves ineffective, should you try the stronger dose of 100mg.

Myth

It is addictive , dangerous, and causes dependence

Fact

Viagra is not physically addictive and it has a good safety record. The side effects are not particularly great or frequent but you should be aware of them. If they do occur, they are usually short lived. Some of the following side effects have been reported:

  • Congestion
  • Diarrhea
  • Facial Flushing
  • Headaches
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Bluish vision

Please note: There are certain conditions where Viagra can be dangerous. It must not be used in patients who need to take nitrate medications and should be used with care in patients who get angina (heart pain) on exercise. Before seeking a Viagra prescription you should be aware that it can adversely interact with some other medications also, including those used to treat HIV. For specialist advice relating to ED you will need to see a urologist.

Myth

Generic Viagra is legal and safe

Fact

Generic Viagra is illegal and unapproved. Pfizer inc. still own the sole rights to pruduce the ED medication. While the countless sites offering generic viagra at cheap prices may seem tempting, it is a dangerous gamble to take. Most counterfeits or unapproved generics for ED treatment are sold outside of the law and the healthcare system, without appropriate assessment and information. Don't expect the benefits of viagra if you use these products. They could in fact pose a serious risk to your health
