Oxytetracycline

Oxytetracycline is an oral antibiotic medication used in the treatment of acne available in capsules. Oxytetracycline is effective against certain bacterial infections such as Propionebacterium acnes.

How it works

Oxytetracycline prevents acne-causing bacteria from reproducing. It does this by preventing each bacterium from forming a protective cell wall necessary for their survival. Bacteria disintegrate and die, stopping the spread of infection.

Taking Oxytetracyline

Oxytetracycline capsules should be taken once a day at the same time.

This antibiotic is useful if the affected area is widespread and creams are difficult to use. Treatment is on-going over a number of months. You should start to see results within 4-8 weeks of beginning treatment.

Oxytetracycline can make the oral contraceptive pill less effective, so alternative contraception should be considered.

Antibiotics can alter the balance of stomach flora resulting in sickness, diarrhoea and mild stomach pains. You may find it beneficial to take a probiotic supplement once a day whilst using Oxytetracycline.
