Spedra - Avanafil : Now available !

What is Spedra?

A new alternative to other drugs for the treatment for erectile dysfunction, Spedra (known as Stendra in the USA, among other countries) has recently become available. The active ingredient is a PDE5 inhibitor called avanafil. Spedra is NOT a permanent cure for erectile dysfunction, it is designed to be taken prior to engaging in sexual activity to help the man achieve and sustain an erection.

How does it work?

Like other PDE5 inhibitors, avanafil acts to relax the blood vessels in the penis and thus helps to increase blood flow which enables patients to achieve and maintain an erection more easily, though, only after sexual stimulation. Clinical trials have suggested that patients may feel the effects of the drug quicker than they do with other treatments like Viagra or Cialis though the guidelines suggest that the tablet be taken approximately 30 minutes before planned sexual activity and the effects will last for roughly 4-5 hours.

The drug is available in the following dosages

50mg, 100mg and 200mg - with the usual recommended starting dose being 100mg.

Is Spedra more effective than the other treatments for erectile dysfunction?

It is impossible to categorically state that any one treatment for erectile dysfunction is more effective than another given that it really does depend entirely from patient to patient, with contributing factors ranging from the underlying medical cause of impotence to the level of sexual stimulation. In the case of Spedra, it remains to be seen how many patients will opt for the new drug and abandon the existing treatments. Sometimes patients will find that it is necessary to try different products in order to be in a position to make an informed decision as to which treatment they feel is most effective.

Side effects

The most common side effects to expect are similar to those reported by patients who use Viagra, Cialis and Levitra:

  • Headaches
  • Flushing
  • Dizziness or light headedness
  • Runny nose

Dosaging instructions:

Take one tablet of the prescribed dosage of Spedra around 30 minutes before engaging in sexual intercourse. Do not exceed more than one tablet of the prescribed dosage in a 24 hour period and do not take Spedra together with any other treatment for erectile dysfunction.

If you eat before consuming the tablet it may take a little longer to take effect. While consumption of alcohol is permitted, for best results it is best to avoid more than 1 or 2 drinks.

Contraindications

Impotence (male erectile dysfunction) and cardiovascular diseases have common risk factors, therefore many of the patients who might benefit from oral impotence treatments also have cardiovascular diseases. A recent review of the evidence concluded that overall the frequency of cardiovascular side effects was low and similar to that seen with placebo (dummy tablets). However, it must not be used in patients who need to take nitrate medications and should be used with care in patients who get angina (heart pain) on exercise. Before seeking a prescription for erectile dysfunction medication, you should be aware that it can adversely interact with some other medications also, including those used to treat HIV.
