Question: My husband and I have been together for 12 years. We have always enjoyed a very active sex life, but recently it has become very difficult for him to become aroused. He says its normal and nothing to worry about, but this isn’t an issue that will simply disappear. What do you suggest?

Answer:Changes to sexual function can be brought about by a number of different things. Ask yourself if anything has anything changed recently - Is your husband stressed, upset or worried about anything? Is he taking any new medications? When you say your husband is having difficulty becoming aroused, do you mean he is having problems obtaining an erection? Or has his desire to have sex decreased? Also, you say the issues have occurred “recently”. If this has been going on over a period longer than a month or two then we would advise your husband speaks to his GP. Erectile difficulties can be caused by psychological and physical reasons, and although it is relatively easy to diagnose the problem, finding the underlying routes cause can be more difficult. All the same it is worth investigating in order to avoid masking a more serious problem by treating its symptoms.
