Hormonal Control with Dianette

Dianette is a treatment for women who suffer from hormonal imbalance. It contains Cyproterone acetate and Ethinylestradiol. These contain two hormones that are similar to oestrogen and progesterone, two hormones naturally produced by the body. The ovaries in the female body produce oestrogens, which are female sex hormones, as well as male sex hormones, known as androgens. In some cases, your body might produce too much androgen, which can affect the skin, as well as facial and body hair growth.

The special hormone in Dianette works by blocking the androgen receptors in the skin, so that it is no longer affected by androgens. This medicine also reduces the activity of the ovaries, so that less hormones are produced.

Dianette has contraceptive properties, but shouldn’t be used solely for this purpose.

Hormonal Control

Excessive facial and body hair

Hirsutism is an excessive growth of hair in a male pattern (usually thick and black), that appear where women don’t usually have hair, for example on the face. It occurs if your body produces too much androgen, or if your skin develops an increased sensitivity to that hormone.

This condition affects about 10% of women in Western societies and causes much distress to the affected patients.

Dianette can be used by women suffering from an excess of hair, as it helps reduce hirsutism. It works by reducing androgen hormones in the body, and by blocking the androgen receptors on the skin so that they stop stimulating further hair growth. It might however take a few months before you start seeing conclusive results.

Hormones and acne

Dianette should only be used if all other acne treatments were unsuccessful. It is a really effective treatment for acne as it helps clear up the skin by reducing the amount of androgens produced by the body, and by blocking the androgens receptors on the skin.

If your body produces too much androgens, or if your skin has an increased sensitivity to them, the glands on your skin may produce too much “sebum”, which is the oily substance that causes oily skin. If you’re having too much sebum, the pores on your skin will get clogged up, causing blackheads or inflammation that will lead to spots.

Contraception

Dianette is like any other combined oral contraceptive, and can be used to effectively prevent pregnancy. It works by preventing the ovaries from releasing eggs. Therefore, you should not take any other hormonal contraceptives while you’re taking Dianette. The contraceptive pill is one of the most effective methods of contraception, so you don’t need any other contraceptive method to prevent pregnancy (the same rule applies as with other contraceptive pills, so you should use extra protection if you’ve forgotten pills or are taking other medications that could interact with it)

You should start taking Dianette on the first day of your menstrual period, taking a pill once a day for 21 days, preferably around the same time each day. After this you should not take any more tablets for the next seven days. Immediately after this 7 day break, start a new blister of 21 pills. During this break you should have a withdrawal bleed, similar to periods, but usually lighter and less painful. If you do not have a withdrawal bleed during the tablet-free break and you have taken all your pills properly, it is very unlikely that you are pregnant. However, you should immediately contact your GP if you have not taken your pills properly, as there might be a chance that you could be pregnant. If you have reasons to believe that you might be pregnant, you should stop taking Dianette right away.
