Non-Specific Urethritis and Ureaplasma Urealyticum

Non-specific urethritis (NSU) is an inflammation of the urethra which is not caused by gonorrhoea. For this reason, it is referred to as non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) in the United States. As the wording suggests, the name means that a specific cause has not been found, i.e. an inflammation of the urethra has been diagnosed and associated conditions displaying these symptoms such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea have been ruled out. Many different pathogens can be responsible as there’s a huge variety of microorganisms living in the human urethra. The two most common ones however are Ureaplasma Urealyticum and Mycoplasma Genitalium.

Ureaplasma urealyticum or parvum is a small bacterial parasite living within the genito-urinary tracts of both men and women. Apart from NSU, it can also cause infertility, stillbirth, premature birth, and, in the perinatal period, pneumonia or meningitis.

U. urealyticum is part of the normal genital flora of both sexes and can be found in circa 70% of sexually active men and women.

Symptoms of NSU

Typical symptoms of non-specific urethritis include:

• Burning or painful sensation when passing urine
• White/cloudy discharge
• Desire to urinate frequently
• Itching
• Irritation

In women, unusual vaginal discharge, anal or oral infections as well as abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding are also reported. It should be noted that the infection can be asymptomatic in both men and women.
