The word “cellulite” is used to describe the dimpled appearance of skin which normally affects areas of the abdomen, upper leg and bottom. The problem, often referred to as the orange peel or cottage cheese effects, is thought to affect up to 90% of women and even some men.

Hormones, in particular the female hormone oestrogen, are thought to play a dominant role in causing cellulite. Oestrogen is linked to the way in which fat is stored around the waist, thighs and bottom; in addition, it can cause water and salt retention. For these reasons the contraceptive pill can worsen the appearance of cellulite.

Changing pill or using a non-hormonal form of contraception may help to improve the appearance of cellulite by eliminating excess water from the body.
