Yasmin

Yasmin is a combined oral contraceptive pill. Yasmin is one of the most well-known contraceptive pills and is often requested by women who do not get on with their current combined oral contraceptive tablet. Yasmin contains two active ingredients: thinylestradiol 30 mcg and drospirenone 3000 mcg. These are synthetic versions of the female reproductive hormones oestrogen and progesterone, which women naturally produce in their ovaries.

How it works

Yasmin works by overriding the natural female cycle.

The combination of oestrogen and progesterone in Yasmin inhibits ovulation, thickens cervical mucus to impede sperm motility and thins the womb lining to make it less able to nurture a fertilised egg.

Taking Yasmin

Yasmin is a monophasic pill, which means all of the tablets contained in the blister pack have the same dose of hormones.

It is usually taken every day for 21 days at about the same time every day, and then followed by 7 Pill free days. You should begin a new blister pack after your Pill-free week.

Further information

Yasmin does not protect against sexually transmitted infection. Even if you are taking the pill to protect against unwanted pregnancy, you should always use a barrier method with a new partner until you have both been tested and cleared for STIs.

Other medications - such as antibiotics, the weight loss pill Xenical, and the emergency oral contraceptive pill – can decrease the effectiveness of Yasmin. It is important you speak to your doctor about how any medicines you are prescribed may affect your contraceptive pill.

Bad experience with Yasmin

Reviewed by Laris on .

When I was 22 my GP put me on Cerazette after having increasly bad migraines while taking Marvelon (which was a great method for me). After a couple of weeks on the new pill, my moods and tempratment were really bad! I became so depressed and also irritable. I also became increasingly paranoid due to bloating and no sign of a period after 3 months. One minute, I would be fine and the next I was either really angry or in a fit of tears. The last straw came, when my parents thought I was suicidal and my mum ordered me to come off it. After a month, my moods started to return to normal. Never again will I touch this pill.

Yasmin vs Evra

Reviewed by Amy Singa on .

Excellent contraceptive.I had tried several pills but still had to look for a better option as pills completely knocked out mind of my libido. But since I started the Evra patch,it kind of plummeted my sex drive.Would highly recommend it for those on COC with low libidos.

My Yasmin experience

Reviewed by Lilly on .

So far, I've had a good experience. I've just finished my first pack.I felt a bit sickly the first few days I took it (I usually take it at 5pm and felt sick about two hours later) but then that went away. I was hoping it would clear up my skin, nothing major has happened yet, I've actually had a few bad breakouts, but I'm hoping its my bodys way of clearing it out. I think we all have to bear in mind that pills work differently with different bodies and what works for me might not work for everyone else. We shouldn't expect miracle pills that clear your skin, stop PMT, reduce periods etc etc. It's just not going to happen. Overall I've had a good experience so far and most importantly it has worked well as a contraceptive!
