Why it is important to treat Chlamydia

If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, fertility problems, ectopic pregnancy (where the baby grows outside the womb) and chronic pelvic pain in women. Babies born to infected mothers can get Chlamydia infections in their eyes and their respiratory tracts. Chlamydia is the most frequent cause of pneumonia and conjunctivitis in newborn babies. Chlamydia Symptoms

If you are infected with chlamydia, you may not experience any symptoms at all, which is why it is often transmitted from one sexual partner to another without either knowing. However, symptoms can occur. These include;

Men

• Discharge from the penis or a burning sensation when urinating.
• Burning and itching around the opening of the penis.
• Pain and swelling in the testicles are uncommon.

Women

• Abnormal vaginal discharge or a burning sensation when urinating.
• Lower abdominal pain, low back pain, nausea, fever, pain during intercourse, or bleeding between menstrual periods.

1 DAY COURSE

Zithromax 1000mg (also called azithromycin)

The one day course for chlamydia treatment comes as four tablets of antibiotic that need to be taken as one dose. We also offer a week-long course. Both treatment options tend to be effective if taken properly, however, the longer courses are more advisable

Potential side-effects

Like any medication, this treatment can have side effects. The most common side effects are feeling sick, being sick, tummy pain, diarrhoea and indigestion or heartburn.

Unsuitable patients

You shouldn't request this treatment if you're allergic to azithromycin. You shouldn't request this treatment without a face to face consultation

• If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding.
• If you suffer from liver or kidney problems
• If you suffer from heart problems.
• If you suffer from porphyria (a blood disorder).

7 DAY COURSE

Doxycycline 100mg X 2 daily for a week

You need to take this treatment every day for seven days. We also offer a chlamydia treatment that is taken as a single dose. Both treatment options are as effective as each other if taken as instructed, however, the longer courses are more advisable

Potential side-effects

Like any medication, this antibiotic can cause side effects. The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. This seven day course of treatment is also known to increase the skin's sensitivity to bright sunlight.

You shouldn't request this treatment if you're allergic to doxycycline. You shouldn't request this treatment without a face to face consultation

• If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding
• If you suffer from liver or kidney problems
• If you suffer from porphyria (a blood disorder)
• If you suffer from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (a blood disorder)
• If you suffer from myasthenia gravis (a muscle weakening disease)

You must refrain from having unprotected sex for at least seven days after you have completed this course of chlamydia treatment.
