What is Propecia?

Propecia (finasteride) is for use by men only, to treat male pattern hair loss by increasing hair growth on the scalp and preventing further hair loss.

Propecia works in the scalp affecting the conversion of testosterone to DHT, a chemical naturally occurring in the male scalp. When the level of DHT goes above a certain level some of the hair follicles in the scalp will hibernate and the hair will fall out. As long as the patient is taking Propecia the level of DHT remains reduced and the hair loss will be reduced or stopped. In some cases some of the hairs will even grow back out.

How well does it work?

Clinical studies indicate that the majority of men who took propecia reported that their bald spot got smaller, their hair loss slowed down, and the appearance of their hair improved.

  • 2 of 3 regrow hair, as measured by hair count.
  • In 1 in 3 there’s no hair re-growth, but most do not have any further hair loss
  • It has no effect in about 1 in 100 men.

How long will I have to take it for?

It is important to use Propecia regularly to get the most benefit. You may need to take Propecia daily for four months or more before you see a benefit and up to 1-2 years for full hair growth. Continue taking Propecia for as long as your doctor prescribes.

What happens if I stop taking it??

You won’t notice an instant hair loss but Propecia can only work over the long term so you must continue taking it to keep the benefits. If you stop taking Propecia, you will likely lose the hair you have gained within 12 months of stopping treatment.

What are the side effects of Propecia?

All medicines can have side effects. Propecia helps most men with male pattern hair loss, but it may have unwanted side effects in a few men. Tell your doctor if you notice any of the following.

  • difficulty in achieving an erection
  • less desire for sex
  • decreased amount of semen released during sex (this decrease does not appear to interfere with normal sexual function)
  • breast swelling and/or tenderness
  • skin rash, itchiness, hives or nettle rash (pinkish, itchy swellings on the skin)
  • testicle pain
  • swelling of the lips or face

Before taking Propecia, tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to this medication, or to a similar medicine called dutasteride (Avodart). Propecia should never be taken or even handled by a woman or a child as it can be absorbed through the skin.
