What is Reductil?

Reductil (chemical name is sibutramine; marketed as Meridia in the United States) is a slimming pill to help you lose weight if you are obese, or overweight with additional risk factors such as diabetes and/or elevated lipids.

Reductil makes you feel full sooner so you eat less food. It should be used for no more than 12 month period and combined with a low calorie diet and an increase in your physical activity.

How does it work?

Sibutramine works by inhibiting certain chemicals in the brain (namely noradrenaline and serotonin) which in turn reduces appetite and enhances feelings of fullness.

By suppressing the appetite, Reductil makes it easier to eat the amount of food required to succesfully lose weight.

What are the side effects of Reductil?

Reductil does have a good rate of success but it is not appropriate for some people because of the potential side effects, which can be quite serious. Not everyone will get these side effects but in clinical studies notable side effects were

  • Increased blood pressure and/or heart rate. It is important that a patient’s blood pressure is monitored every two weeks for the first three months of use and then monthly thereafter. You will have to stop taking this medicine if your blood pressure or resting pulse rate increase after you start taking it.
  • CHECK YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE: You can have your blood pressure checked at your GP, gym, or a local pharmacy. Home monitors are also available to buy either online or from your local pharmacy.

  • Palpitations.
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Sleeplessness

Most people who get side effects get them early on (in the first four weeks) and find they wear off over time. Read the packet leaflet for a full list of possible side effects).

What precautions should I take?

It is very important that you disclose your full medical history as Reductil can be dangerous if taken in certain circumstances.

Do not take sibutramine if you are taking monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors or have stopped taking them within the past 2 weeks. Do not start taking these drugs for at least 2 weeks after you stop taking sibutramine

  • Do not take other prescription or non-prescription slimming pills, herbal products or nutritional supplements to help you lose weight while you are taking sibutramine
  • Tell your doctor and pharmacist what other prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking. Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects
  • Tell your doctor if you have or had in past any eating disorder like; Anorexia nervosa, Bulimia nervosa, Cancer, Chest pain; seizures; a stroke or mini-stroke; pulmonary hypertension (high pressure in the vessel that moves blood from the heart to the lungs, Congestive heart failure, Depression, Gallstones, Glaucoma, Hemophilia or other bleeding problems; high blood pressure; irregular heart beat; migraine headaches; osteoporosis, Parkinson's disease; or kidney, liver, or thyroid disease

Taking Reductil

The normal prescribed dose for Reductil is one 10mg or 15mg tablet a day at least one hour before eating. The starting dose for Reductil is 10 mg.
